We express our deep condolences to the family and loved ones of 24 year old Mohsin Sadiq Sheikh, an IT professional who was beaten to death by 7 goons of an outfit that calls itself the Hindu Rashtra Sena because of some comments he made on Facebook.
"That our country has come to a point that somebody can be beaten to death because of something he has said on Facebook is a very serious indictment of some of the extreme beliefs that have been allowed to take hold in the imaginations of certain people," said Congress spokesperson Shashi Tharoor.
"People must understand that the answer to an opinion is another opinion, the answer to a word is another word. It is not violence by people going around claiming in the name of a religion, the life of another individual," he said.
Shri Tharoor expressed his pain as a Hindu, at the violence that was being carried out in the name of Hinduism.
"I happen to practice that religion myself. I am ashamed of these people who my Hinduism as a justification for assaulting somebody for what he has done or said," he said.
24-year-old Mohsin Sadiq Shaikh was attacked on Sunday evening when he was returning home with a friend after dinner the police said.
The Maharashta government acted swiftly against those responsible for the incident. Seven people associated with the Hindu Rashtra Sena, a radical outfit in Maharashtra, have been arrested in Pune in connection with the alleged murder of the young IT professional in the city.
